90 Day Cafe

February 24, 2011

Today, I went for a coffee here

Probably the best thing about this place is how it got started. If I remember correctly, I think it was a couple of recent University graduates saw the lease advertised and decided to try their hand at setting up a coffee shop. Unfortunately they only had enough money to rent the place for the first 3 months, but they decided to go for it anyway, hence the name “The 90 Day Cafe”. Anyway, as you may have guessed The 90 Day Cafe proved to be quite successful and has now been in business for much longer than its namesake 90 days.

As a coffee shop I thought it was OK: There are the standard quirky touches like ethically sourced coffee and hand-written chalk-board menus, but it does have plenty of original ideas which manage to assert its own playful personality, for example signs like this

The shop seems to have built up a constant flow of customers and in particular seems to have built up a significant following around its gourmet cupcakes, which are pretty spectacular. However this brings me on to, in my opinion, the big disadvantage of this place: It was completely populated by very boring middle-aged and above, middle-class and above career housewife types; sitting inside feels a bit like entering a knitting group or a Richard and Judy book club. Business built around cupcakes, packed full of middle-aged women; you go figure.
